Outdoor Fall Makeover Tips: Easy Autumn Upgrades for Stunning Curb Appeal

Updated: Aug 1

Ahhh Fall… just the mention of the word brings to mind: pumpkins, warm spices, football, apple picking, and of course, jewel-toned leaves and flowers. I adore this time of year and welcome the change of season with open arms by updating my curb appeal to reflect the cooler season. Just like our clothing choices change with each season, as do our spaces. There are endless ways to update your outdoor areas to add value whether you are getting ready to sell or just settling in.

Front Entry Curb Appeal:

For those of you that are fortunate enough to have porches, this is great opportunity to pull out the flannel and plaid. For example, add pillows, and throws for your rocking chairs or porch swings to cozy up with. No porch? Pull in those fall feels with a fabulous wreath on the front door. Don’t love bright autumn hues? Go for a mix of neutrals and burlap. Natural materials are at the forefront this time of year with all the beautiful seed heads beginning to form before the cold winter months. Speaking of seeds, now is the time to update those tired summer planters too. Grasses are an affordable way to get a big bang for your buck and make a show stopping centerpiece. As the season progresses, the grasses will dry and offer winter interest as well. Remember that flowers are only one element that add curb appeal. I’ve seen dried corn stalks, large birch branches, calico corn and all colors of pumpkins and gourds, so don’t limit yourself to just flowers. Get creative, use what you like, and don’t be afraid to use varying height. That’s what draws your eye in! Stick to the thriller, filler, spiller rule: Something tall as the thrill, something medium height as the fill, and something the gently falls over the container as the spill. Don’t want to plant? There are a rainbow of colored mums that will begin popping up at local retailers. Just drop them in a pot for an instant arrangement.

Autumn Design tip: Place mums or pumpkins in odd numbered groups 1, 3’s and 5’s give a pleasing visual impact. If you are going for perfect symmetry, simply balance both sides to mirror one another exactly. If you’ve got front planting beds, make sure to pull out spent summer annuals and freshen the mulch.

Back Yard Inspo: Have a fire pit? You can apply these same design tips out there too. With nights getting earlier and cooler, you may want to add some outdoor string lights to add some sparkle. Maybe you have a s'more dessert night outdoors with the kiddos or a football watch party? Think of all the memories you can make in your freshly updated hang out! Your family, friends, and neighbors will linger longer in those spaces with the seasonal shift you've created. Have fun with it and Happy Fall Y’all!
